Also known as: Cathelicidin, CAP-18, Human Antimicrobial Peptide
LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide, a 37-amino acid cationic peptide derived from hCAP18. It exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi while modulating immune responses and promoting wound healing.
LL-37 disrupts bacterial cell membranes through its positive charge (+6), creating transmembrane pores that cause cell lysis. It also binds to host receptors (FPRL-1, P2X7, EGFR) to boost chemotaxis, cell proliferation, and immunoregulation. Unlike traditional antibiotics, bacteria rarely develop resistance to it.
Extensive research in antimicrobial applications. Not FDA approved. Published studies available on PubMed (PMC8227053).
